I Wish We Knew These Were The Good Times When We Were In Them

'I Wish We Knew These Were The Good Times When We Were In Them’ is a quinquennial series (2019 - 2024) documenting the radically changing landscape of Box Hill, a suburb 14km east of Melbourne’s CBD through the lens of international award winning photographer and life long resident Wilhelm Philipp.

This series focuses on the transformation of the Box Hill area over a 5 year period, shining a light on the diverse members of the community who have played a critical role in building and upholding Box Hill's identity. As well as documenting the radical change that occurs when a quiet suburb is built 55 stories high into a city. This body of work acts as an artefact capturing moments in time unwitnessed by the common eye.

The identity of the Eastern suburbs is currently in the middle of a radical makeover, moving at a pace never before seen. Wrecking balls are attached to ‘for sale’ signs, and cranes fill the horizons. The meaning of heritage is being diluted as urbanisation redefines what the area once was.

This body of work features 42 framed photographs on display at the Whitehorse Artspace inside of the Box Hill Town Hall from the 7th of September until the 19th of October and is the featured exhibition for Heritage Week.

Dinosaur Dreaming

Unbeknownst to a majority of the general public, Australia is home to a thriving palaeontology scene. In fact, the current record rate of discovery of new fossils and dinosaurs has the country in a “dinosaur boom.” Dinosaur Dreaming is a documentation of four digs spanning from 2019-2023 and is dedicated to the hard working individuals working to discover unknown histories of our past.

Presented by Hillvale, this exhibition is the major group show at Hillvale Gallery featuring: Ben Hattingh, Clem McNabb, EJ Hassan & Kaede James Takamoto, Ed Gorwell, Gabrielle Hall-Lomax, Harley & Handen, Lina Zackariya, Mert Berdilek, Sarah Cutbush, Sophie Smith and Wilhelm Philipp.

Under The Same Sky

Under The Same Sky is an ethereal collection of cloud photographs that capture the beauty of the sky’s ever changing canvas. From their shape to their form and colour, Wilhelm Philipp shares his adornment for the soft elegance of clouds, presenting a tender feeling of their simple, gentle charm. All photographs featured in this body of work were photographed in my very own backyard.

Presented by The Weather Channel ‘Kicking A Dead Man’ + ‘Under The Same Sky’ is a duo exhibition and zine launch showcasing two separate bodies of work from Box Hill duo Michael J Kennedy and Wilhelm Philipp from April 19th to April 20th at Spacebound Gallery, Collingwood.

Spacebound Gallery, 19 - 20 April 2024

Forevermore

Forevermore is an exhibition and publication by Wilhelm Philipp and Matthew Peter Karak, released in conjunction with the Museum of Australian Photography.

The work captures quiet landscapes of the Wheelers Hill area, detailing its natural beauty throughout the years of 2019-2022. Forevermore serves as a love letter to Karak's lifelong home area of 26 years. These works capture a memory of his adolescence and early adulthood, dedicated to the Wheelers Hill community past, present and future. The exhibition features 16 framed images from the series.

Forevermore exhibited at the MAPh Atrium from 18 November 2022 - 16 January 2023 and Monash Civic Centre from 23 January - 20 November 2023. It was the first physical exhibition to be held at the building.

Nothing Without You

Nothing Without You is a photographic exploration detailing the bonds and relationships between life and death. In 2017, Wilhelm lost his grandfather, a death that impacted him deeply. Feeling lost he looked to his work to try and find answers or at least a sense of direction in life. Nothing Without You was that answer.

From 2017-2019 Wilhelm sought out subjects that shared bonds with both life and death. From priests and their dedication to God, a deceased entity that gives their life meaning and purpose to those they preach to. To a funeral celebrant, who celebrates the life of those no longer with us with their loved ones. To an artist using the bones of a deceased animal to create a work of art and of course my family. The journey of speaking with and photographing these subjects brought new meaning and joy to my own life. A body of work born from the passing of his grandfather, breathed life into his photography.

'Nothing Without You' was self-published in 2019 and exhibited for one night at Brick + Mortar Supply.

You can view the full series here.
